Tonda PF Split Seconds Rattrapante
This is an example of the Ref. DS2022-XXX, a watch that, until very recently, flew under my radar. This version is perhaps our favorite iteration of the split-second chronograph from Parmigiani Fleurier. The caliber PF361 powering the Tonda PF Split was first introduced in 2016 for the brand's 20th anniversary in the Tonda Chronor Anniversaire. This was Parmigiani Fleuriers' first in-house integrated chronograph, manually wound and with a split-second function to boot. The final touch of extravagance for the anniversary piece came in the form of a movement produced entirely out of solid gold akin to the likes of FP. Journe.
Regarding finishing, PF361 delivers many superb internal angles, all achieved by hand, large polished beveled angles on the bridges, a sandblasted main plate, and straight graining on the top of the bridges. The dual-column wheels and the rattrapante mechanism are easily visible through the case back. Even though this is a sold gold movement, there are a few steel and brass parts, but of course, they are finished to the same beautiful standard as the rest of the movement. Where this watch reaches the nth degree of lust and admiration is the Salmon dial. Admittedly, this color is divisive; when done right and in platinum, it’s worth giving a second look. This pairing is usually reserved for the most prestigious of calibers from the most well-regarded brands, and this is no exception.</span>

The Parmigiani Fleurier brand - a watch-making adventure that transcends the mundane - was created in Fleurier in 1996 and was guided by the passion of a man who remained faithful to the very essence of the watchmaker. Michel Parmigiani, master horologist, renowned restorer, and talented creator of mechanical time-keepers, dedicates his knowledge, which has been enriched by past and present teachings, to the benefit of the brand.
The Sandoz Family Foundation, who had tasked a young Michel Parmigiani to lead the restoration of their horological artifact collection, became interested in bringing Parmigiani's masterful work to the consumer market. In 1996, with the backing of the Sandoz Foundation, Parmigiani Fleurier was able to fit out its manufacturing workshops with the means to produce exceptionally high-quality goods. In less than 10 years, it achieved near complete vertical integration, and the industrial equipment deployed constitutes one of the rarest and most complete manufacturing workshops in Switzerland. The very essence of haute horology, such as attention to detail or the beauty of the embellishment of a simple or highly complicated movement, is the subject of great attention at Parmigiani Fleurier and is the reason for its international recognition.
