Nivada Grenchen

Chronosport

$2,380.00

FIRST BATCH OF DELIVERIES: LATE OCTOBER

$2,380.00

It's believed that the original Chronosport was made in only around 20 examples and, for reasons unknown, was never commercially produced. These original Chronosport prototypes have not been lost to time thanks to the work of apt collectors, enthusiasts and their unwavering passion for original Nivada Grenchen watches. What makes this 'failure to launch' more fascinating is the attractiveness of the watch overall, and most notably the "singer dial," which shares design details similar to those of Rolex Daytona's so-called "Paul Newman" dials.

The contemporary Chronosport is a faithful love letter to racing chronographs from the golden era of the segment born in the 1970s. Carrying the Chronosport to mythical status is the dial designed by the legendary Jean Singer, one of the most notable dial manufacturers in Switzerland at the time. His exotic creations, such as the Omega Speedmaster Racing and Heuer Skipper, are some of the most sought-after watches among vintage enthusiasts. The Chronosport integrates these triumphant components of cushion-case, integrated bracelet, and original dial layout that speaks to the spirit of road racing and the era's quintessential aesthetic.

Nivada was established in Grenchen, Switzerland as early as 1879, but their official foundation is accepted as 1926. In 1939, Nivada formed a business partnership with the New York-based Croton Watch Company, allowing them to import and distribute Nivada watches across the United States and North America. This partnership proved successful and lasted up until the 'quartz crisis'.

During the 1960s and 70s, Movado pursued legal action against Nivada Grenchen, citing that their name sounded too phonetically similar to Movado. Consequently, Nivada Grenchen was prohibited from using the Nivada name in the US Market. As a result of this prohibition, Nivada Grenchen tapped into its distribution partnerships and continued to release watches in the US under various brand names, including Croton Nivada, Croton Nivada Grenchen, and simply Croton.

Modern Nivada Grenchen displays a multitude of diverse emblems and dial signatures across its various models, paying homage to the varied logos and stamps that its original watches carried over the decades.

In 2018, Guillaume Laidet and Remi Chabrat, two watchmaking entrepreneurs, determined to revive the Nivada brand with its original heritage. In 2019, they obtained the license to use the Nivada Grenchen copyright and have since produced faithful reissues and new models based on the rich historical catalog and original vintage discoveries.

OUR PERSPECTIVE

ALBERT TREVINOSENIOR CURATOR

Thoughts on the Chronosport:

"The Chronosport evokes the gritty, fast, dangerous racetrack asphalt era of the 1970s, synonymous with some of the most legendary pieces in watchmaking. This piece oozes the style and dignity of a true racing chronograph, on par with the likes of the Heuers and Zeniths of the era."
