Model Overview

This Daniel Roth Le Sentier reference 177 is a testimony to the watchmaker's legacy. It is one of the early timepieces manufactured between 1995 and 1999.

The double-ellipse steel case reflects the signature Daniel Roth design on the wrist. Its unique shape is neither round nor rectangular, yet finely balanced. The case measures a traditional 38.5 mm x 35.5 mm and tops out at a profile of 7.8mm, allowing it to slip under a cuff with ease.

This cult timepiece is further characterized by a high level of finishing featuring the signature pinstripe guilloché pattern. The hand-engraved, silver dial is visually stunning yet highly legible due to its elegant color contrasts, Roman numerals placed on a brushed chapter ring, and blue arrow-shaped hands with a sweep second anchor-shaped hand.

The dial spots vintage tritium indexes above the numerals and Tritium-filled hand tips – a rare and radioactive isotope of hydrogen called tritium, being used in the past as the energy source in radioluminescent lights for wristwatches before it was replaced by luminova and later on super luminova – that today no longer reflects light on the dial but does catch a certain gloom.

The dial is signed 'DANIEL ROTH' at 12. The stepped bezel and sharp, straight lugs emphasize the dial's strong presence. It expresses simplicity infused with refinement—an everlasting, captivating scene of lines and curves.

The date aperture at six o'clock, aesthetically deviating from the signature sub-dial at six, indicates the bidirectional 'quick-set' date – which can be easily changed by moving the screw-down crown either forwards or backward – marking the watch's primary function besides telling time. A subtle 'Swiss' engraving can be found under the date, hinting to the watch's cradle in the Vallée de Joux – yet the model's name speaks its part.

The stunning attention to detail speaks from the partly gold rotor, seen through the open sapphire case back, the case back signed with Daniel Roth and its unique number, and the rare, signed folding buckle in steel with a pattern equivalent to the watch's dial.

Brand Focus

Daniel Roth

Daniel Roth was a renowned watchmaker who established the design language of Breguet dress watches. In the '60s and '70s, Breguet was an average watch brand with no future until it was acquired by Chaumet. Daniel Roth was appointed to lead the helm, and he played a significant role in reviving the brand.

The reference 3130, with its guilloche dial and straight-lugged case, set the tone for Breguet for decades to come and became Daniel Roth's lasting impression during his leadership. Additionally, he was instrumental in producing complicated movements for Lemania, which has supplied chronograph calibers to brands like Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin.

After that chapter of Roth's life and entering the '90s, the independent brand 'Daniel Roth' began to form. There are three distinct periods in the Daniel Roth brand, which are detailed as follows:

The early period when he was genuinely independent.

The middle period was when The Hour Glass was a stakeholder.

The final period was when Bvlgari purchased rights to the Daniel Roth name, and Daniel Roth himself left the company.
